Son of porn pioneer arrested in slaying

NOVATO, Calif., July 13 (UPI) -- The son of the late San Francisco pornography pioneer Jim Mitchell has been arrested for allegedly killing his girlfriend, police said.

James Raphael Mitchell, 27, was taken into custody by police in Novato, Calif., Sunday after an intense five-hour manhunt during which authorities said Mitchell held the couple's 1-year-old daughter captive, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.

The girl was unharmed, Novato police Sgt. Jennifer Welch told the newspaper.

"It's a great ending to a tragic event," Welch said. "We're certainly pleased the child was located, unharmed, and our resources are now going to be focused on the criminal investigation."

The unnamed victim's mother, Claudia Stevens, said her daughter had filed a restraining order against Mitchell after a series of frightening incidents, asserting her daughter had sole custody of the infant.

Stevens reportedly confirmed Mitchell's father was the legendary porn movie producer Jim Mitchell, who along with his brother Artie was credited with introducing plots into X-rated films with their 1972 movie "Behind the Green Door."

Jim Mitchell, who died in 2007, shot and killed Artie in 1991 in what he maintained was a botched attempt to confront him over his alleged drug use, the Chronicle said.
