CHICAGO MAYOR DALEY VOTES IN GENERAL ELECTION

GRAND BEACH, Mich., July 13 (UPI) -- A security guard for Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley Monday captured one of three escaped Indiana convicts, police in Grand Beach, Mich., said.

Convicted murderer Charles Smith, 48, was apprehended without a struggle by a Chicago police officer assigned to protect Daley's summer home, Grand Beach, Mich., Police Chief Dan Schroeder said.

Smith was captured about a quarter mile from the Daley home, CBS News reported. It was not immediately known if Daley was at the home at the time.

Police Monday were searching for the other escaped inmates, seen walking along railroad tracks in the area shortly after midnight, Schroeder said.

Grand Beach is about 15 miles from the Indiana state maximum-security prison in Michigan City, Ind.

Smith and the two other convicts escaped from the prison Sunday through permanent tunnels used to move supplies, authorities said.

Smith was serving 95 years for a murder conviction. Lance Battreal, 45, was serving 53 years for rape, stalking and criminal confinement convictions and Mark Booher, 46, was serving 85 years for murder and felony robbery convictions, The Gary (Ind.) Post-Tribune reported Monday.
