WASHINGTON, July 13 (UPI) -- A leading U.S. Senate Democrat said Sunday Congress can reach a compromise on healthcare reform before its August recess.
Appearing on ABC's "This Week," Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., said most Americans want the government to fix aspects of the healthcare system that are broken. He said opposition to proposals for a government-run healthcare option is coming largely from insurance companies whose profits are threatened.
On the same program, Sen. Jon Kyl, R-Ariz., said Sunday Republicans are committed to healthcare reform, but don't want the government to increase the deficit to pay for it. Kyl rejected a government-run healthcare plan.
Durbin said he thinks a compromise can be reached before the August congressional recess but Kyl said he doubted that. He said President Barack Obama is correct when he says if a compromise is not reached quickly it won't be reached at all.
