JEFFERSONVILLE, Ind., July 12 (UPI) -- A five-hour armed standoff in Jeffersonville, Ind., ended with a suspected bank robber being fatally shot by police, officials say.

The unidentified suspect was shot several times after allegedly pointing his gun at officers while exiting his truck Saturday night, the Louisville Courier-Journal reported.

Jeffersonville Police Detective Todd Hollis told the newspaper officers first hit the suspect with rubber bullets, but he got up and started moving toward police as they yelled at him to drop his loaded weapon.

"It didn't appear at any time that he was surrendering because he would not release the weapon," Hollis said.

The man, suspected of robbing a bank branch at a Jeffersonville store, was pulled over by a police officer but allegedly refused to leave his truck, creating a standoff as neighbors came out of their houses to watch, the Courier-Journal said.
