British Airways plane evacuated in Phoenix

PHOENIX, July 11 (UPI) -- A British Airways flight was evacuated at an airport gate in Phoenix, Ariz., after smoke was reported in the cabin, officials said.

Capt. Shelly Jamison, spokeswoman of the Phoenix Fire Department, told CNN that Flight 288 was about to leave Phoenix bound for London and was taxiing for takeoff Friday evening when passengers noticed a strong odor.

She said the plane came back to the gate and 298 passengers were evacuated via emergency chute, with 15 of them suffering minor injuries such as cuts and bruises.

CNN said dozens of firefighters responded to the scene Phoenix's Sky Harbor International Airport, but they could not determine the cause of the fire. Jameson told the broadcaster the problems may have been caused by an electrical fire.
