4 animals dead in Calgary Stampede

CALGARY, Alberta, July 11 (UPI) -- Three horses and a steer have died at the Calgary Stampede this week in Canada, officials said.

An outrider's horse collapsed and died Friday night, the Calgary Herald reported Saturday. Veterinarians said the animal suffered a heart attack.

A steer was put down Thursday after its spine was injured. The steer was being wrestled during the rodeo when it was hurt.

On Tuesday, a horse pulling a chuck wagon in a race heat was euthanized in front of an audience of 10,000 after it collapsed. Another horse suffered a heart attack Sunday.

A dozen horses died at the Stampede in 1986, most of them put down after being injured. Organizers made major changes to prevent pileups in races, cutting the number of animal deaths.

The last human death attributed to a Stampede event occurred in 1999 when a chuck wagon driver suffered a fatal head injury.
