TACOMA, Wash., July 10 (UPI) -- Officials at Fort Lewis, an Army base in Washington state, were trying to determine Friday what killed an officer cadet found dead after a training exercise.

The body of Daniel Miller, 19, was found shortly after 9 a.m. Thursday, about seven hours after he was reported missing, The Tacoma News Tribune reported.

Miller was a student at Houghton College in upstate New York and a member of the Reserve Officer Training Corps at St. Bonaventure University nearby.

Fort Lewis, in a press release, said Miller was participating in a land navigation training course early Thursday.

Miller was at Fort Lewis for "Operation Warrior Forge," the leadership development and assessment course. The course is required for ROTC cadets, usually in the summer before they graduate from college, and about 5,000 officer candidates go through it at Fort Lewis every year.
