CAIRO, July 10 (UPI) -- The fatal stabbing of an Egyptian woman in a German courtroom by a man she had charged with calling her a terrorist has set off a wave of anger in her homeland.
Marwa Sherbini was buried Monday in Alexandria, the BBC reported. Thousands of people came to the funeral and protested her death.
More demonstrations were expected Friday.
Sherbini was attacked by a Russian immigrant who had been fined for calling her a "terrorist" because she was wearing a Muslim headscarf. He has been charged with murder.
Sherbini's husband, a scientist, was shot by a police officer and seriously injured as he tried to protect his wife. The couple had one child and Sherbini was pregnant.
A spokesman for German Chancellor Angela Merkel said she planned to talk to Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak about the crime on the sidelines of the Group of Eight meeting in Italy.
"This is an abhorrent deed, one that has left us all dismayed and shocked," Steg said.
