RICHMOND, British Columbia, July 10 (UPI) -- A twin-engine Canadian aircraft crashed into a parking lot on landing approach at Vancouver International Airport Thursday night, killing both people on board.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police said the craft was a Piper Navajo Chieftain PA-31 flying from Victoria when it went down at 10:15 p.m., The Province reported.

The plane was behind an Air Canada Airbus on landing approach when it swerved and then nose-dived into a parking lot in an industrial area and created a spectacular fireball, witnesses told Global News.

"There's nothing left. There's nothing resembling wings or fuselage or nothing. It was all gone," one witness said.

No-one on the ground was injured, the RCMP said.

The Canwest News Service said investigators were expected to examine whether the eight-seat plane was affected by the wake of the larger aircraft in front of it.
