Russian President Putin and Libyan Leader Gadhafi meet in Tripoli

L'AQUILA, Italy, July 10 (UPI) -- British Prime Minister Gordon Brown asked Libyan strongman Moammar Gadhafi for help in repatriating a child kidnapped by her Libyan father two years ago.

Brown broached the matter Friday when he and Gadhafi met during the Group of Eight summit at L'Aquila, Italy, telling Gadhafi that British officials wanted to reunite Nadia Fawzi, 6, with her mother, The Times of London reported.

Gadhafi indicated he would to look into the case and see what action he could take, a spokesman for Brown said. Gadhafi attended the summit as the chairman of the African Union.

The two leaders met for 40 minutes, discussing a range of subjects, including the 1988 bombing of Pan American Flight 101 over Lockerbie, Scotland, for which Libya was blamed. Gadhafi was an international outcast for years following the bombing, until he agreed to end his country's weapons of mass destruction capability and accepted responsibility for the attack.

Brown reiterated "admiration and gratitude" for Gadhafi's decision to end his WMD program.

Gadhafi raised the case of Lockerbie bomber Abdelbaset Ali al-Megrahi, who is appealing his conviction and seeking return to Libya, the Times said. However, Brown said it was a matter for the Scottish government.
