MANSFIELD, England, July 9 (UPI) -- Authorities in England said a 49-year-old teacher has been arrested for allegedly attacking a 14-year-old student.

Parents of students at the All Saints' Roman Catholic School in Mansfield said the teacher allegedly attacked the student with a weight during a class Wednesday, The Daily Telegraph reported Friday.

The boy was taken to Mansfield's Kings Mill Hospital with head injuries, but was transferred to the Queen's Medical Center in Nottingham when his condition worsened during the afternoon.

The Nottinghamshire County Council said the boy's condition "slightly improved" overnight.

"A 49-year-old was arrested and remains in the policy custody in connection with this incident," a council spokeswoman said. "The police investigation is being led by Detective Superintendent Adrian Pearson, with specialist officers from the public protection unit. They are working with the head-teacher and staff at All Saints' Roman Catholic School."
