AHMEDABAD, India, July 9 (UPI) -- Police in India say at least 96 people have died and dozens more are ailing after consuming a toxic illegal alcohol.
The BBC said Thursday that the deaths in the Indian state of Gujarat have been blamed on the illegally produced moonshine that is commonplace in India due to its high alcohol content and affordability.
The illegal beverage remains popular despite the fact it often contains chemicals and pesticides that can potentially kill those who consume the moonshine.
The sale of any alcohol in Gujarat is currently banned, the BBC said.
Meanwhile, Gujarat Minister of State for Home Amit Shah said Wednesday that two police inspectors have been suspended in relation to the moonshine deaths.
Thaindia News reported Shah also confirmed a deputy superintendent of police is facing a possible suspension in connection with the recent spate of deaths, which have not resulted in any arrests to date.
The moonshine deaths will be investigated by a special commission to be led by a retired high court judge, Thaindia reported.
