SACRAMENTO, July 9 (UPI) -- California is dealing with overcrowded jails and a financial crisis by using early release for such offenses as parole violations, officials say.
Authorities said at least 89 inmates have been freed or approved for early release during the past two months at Chino and San Diego and Shasta counties.
Others have been sent to home detention, drug rehabilitation programs or similar alternative punishments.
No one serving time for more serious offenses such as murder, manslaughter, kidnapping or sexual offenses is eligible, the Los Angeles Times said.
