AIDS protest results in 26 arrests

WASHINGTON, July 9 (UPI) -- Police in Washington said they arrested 26 individuals who had been protesting federal AIDS policy at the Capitol Thursday.

Police told CNN those individuals arrested during the Capitol Rotunda demonstration stand accused of unlawful assembly and disorderly conduct.

The activist group, Health Global Access Project, is attempting to convince congressional officials to increase funding for AIDS and human immunodeficiency virus projects in the healthcare reform plan.

The group said in a statement that among the projects needing more funds are global AIDS programs and AIDS housing programs, CNN reported.

The U.S. Congress has been discussing the financial details of the healthcare reform plan this week.
