NEW DELHI, July 8 (UPI) -- An explosion at a fireworks factory in southern India has killed 17 people and injured 21 others, officials said Wednesday.

A divisional fire leader said the explosion occurred Tuesday night in one of several small rooms at the factory in the Madurai district of Tamil Nadu state, CNN reported.

A young boy was among the dead and nine women were among the injured, officials said.

An investigation is under way to determine the cause of the explosion, but officials said it occurred when firecrackers were being packed.
