Brazilian vice president out of hospital

SAO PAULO, July 7 (UPI) -- Brazilian Vice President Jose Alencar was released from the hospital after receiving treatment for acute abdominal pains.

The 77-year-old Alencar was admitted to a Sao Paulo hospital during the weekend. He left Monday saying he was feeling better, Estado de Sao Paulo reported.

Alencar has been battling abdominal cancer since he was diagnosed in 1997.

Despite his illness, the vice president has served throughout the administration of President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, who took office in 2002.
