LIVERPOOL, England, July 6 (UPI) -- A search was under way in Liverpool, England, for possible survivors of a crane collapse onto an apartment block Monday, authorities say.

The Liverpool Echo said the condition of the man operating the 200-foot crane is unknown and it is suspected a number of individuals remain trapped in the wreckage.

Police, fire and ambulance crews have been dispatched to the scene to aid in the rescue effort.

Nearby resident Maria Toolan told the Echo she witnessed the crane crash into the apartments.

"I heard a horrendous noise and ran to the balcony," said Toolan, who lives in an apartment across from the accident site. "I watched in horror as a massive red crane tumbled into the apartment block.

"I was in complete shock as all I could think of is what if it had fallen the other way and landed on me."
