N. Korea test fires short-range missiles

PYONGYANG, North Korea, July 2 (UPI) -- North Korea test fired two missiles Thursday hours after it ended unsuccessful talks with South Korea on a joint industrial complex, South Korea said.

Officials in Seoul said the short-range missiles fired near the coastal city of Wonsan appeared to be ground-to-ship weaponry, the South Korean news agency Yonhap reported.

Earlier Thursday, talks between the two Koreas about their joint factory park in the North Korean border city of Kaesong ended without an agreement or a date for another round of discussions. The park is the last cross-border venture arising from a 2000 summit of North and South Korean leaders. The complex is home to more than 100 South Korean firms that employ 40,000 North Koreans.

The reported test-firing is the latest provocative move North Korea has made since the U.N. Security Council passed a resolution that strengthens sanctions on Pyongyang for its underground nuclear test in May.
