Swedish clinic accused of vasectomy mix-up

VASTERAS, Sweden, July 1 (UPI) -- A man alleges staff at a medical clinic in central Sweden performed a vasectomy on him when he went in for a biopsy on his prostate.

The man, whose identity was not reported, alleges doctors at the clinic in the Swedish city of Vasteras conducted the sterilization procedure after confusing his procedure with a vasectomy scheduled for the next day on someone else, The Local reported Tuesday.

The patient alleges in a complaint to Sweden's National Board of Health and Welfare that staff at the urology and gynecology clinic did not double-check his identity prior to the June 22 procedure.

The Local said the health agency will review the alleged error to determine if the clinic should face sanctions.
