MIAMI, July 1 (UPI) -- Miami-Dade County airport officials say they need to move quickly on a proposal to operate slot machines at Miami International Airport.

Deputy Aviation Director Miguel Southwell said Florida gaming laws are due to change soon with the approval of a compact between the state and the Seminole Tribe.

"The window of opportunity may close shortly," Southwell told the county commission Tuesday. "It doesn't mean we would do it, but we would like to have the option."

The commissioners voted to allow the county to seek a permit to operate slots as a means of generating revenue at the airport.

The Miami Herald said Wednesday the idea has drawn flak from private gaming interests; however, the slots would be located in the terminal areas of the airport that cannot be accessed by the general public.
