WHO: 70,000-plus H1N1 flu cases worldwide

GENEVA, Switzerland, June 30 (UPI) -- The World Health Organization in Switzerland says the reported number of confirmed H1N1 flu cases has reached nearly 71,000 worldwide, with 311 deaths.

The United States has the most confirmed cases since the outbreak in April, reporting 27,717 confirmed cases of H1N1 flu, formerly called swine flu. Of that U.S. total, 127 people died, statistics posted on the WHO Web site indicated.

Mexico, the epicenter of the outbreak, reported 8,279 confirmed cases and 116 deaths. Canadian medical officials reported 7,775 confirmed cases and 21 deaths.
