MORONI, Comoros, June 30 (UPI) -- Search crews found a 14-year-old girl among the wreckage of an airplane that crashed into the Indian Ocean on the way to the Comoros, officials said Tuesday
The girl, a resident of the Comoros, appeared to be the only survivor from Yemenia Air Flight IY626, which was carrying more than 150 people, The Daily Telegraph reported. She was taken to a hospital in Comoros and rescuers described her as "very tired."
The searchers also found bodies, wreckage and even handbags floating at the crash site.
The Airbus A300-310 crashed about 10 miles at sea after an attempt at landing failed. Rescue crews in high-speed boats were dispatched when the plane disappeared from radar.
The crash occurred as the plane approached the Hahaya Airport in Moroni.
"I saw the plane approach and then go away again," said Houmed Msaidie, a former defense minister who was at the airport because his mother-in-law was on the plane. "I just could not understand it."
Most of the passengers were believed to be residents of the Comoros, including 66 who held French citizenship.
