8 die in Afghan-Pakistani border bombing

TORKHUM, Afghanistan, June 30 (UPI) -- Eight people died in a suicide bombing near the Afghan-Pakistani border and 10 militants were killed in fighting with Afghan forces Tuesday, authorities said.

The Pakistani newspaper Dawn reported officials said two Afghan border guards, four women and two children died in the suicide attack at a security checkpoint near Torkhum on the Afghan side of the border.

Several other people were wounded, four critically, Dawn said.

Officials also said at least seven people were killed and three injured Monday evening when security forces fired a mortar shells at houses in the village of Chora suspected of harboring militants.

Meanwhile, Voice of America reported Tuesday airstrikes killed at least 12 militants overnight.

The militants allegedly were sneaking foreign fighters from Pakistan into Afghanistan, VOA said.
