LONDON, June 29 (UPI) -- Former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher has been released from a London hospital after surgery to repair a broken shoulder, sources said.

During her 17-day stay at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, Thatcher, 83, underwent surgery for a broken upper shoulder that failed to heal after a fall, The Daily Telegraph reported Monday.

A smiling Thatcher, her left arm in a sling, Monday waved with her right arm to a small group gathered outside her home in London's Belgravia neighborhood.

A series of minor strokes has forced Thatcher to stop accepting public speaking engagements.

Thatcher was Britain's first, and so far only, female prime minister, serving in that role from 1979 to 1990.
