NYC daycare robbery leads to pot stash

NEW YORK, June 28 (UPI) -- New York police say they found a stash of cash and marijuana in a Brooklyn daycare center that was the scene of a brazen robbery attempt and shooting.

More than 10 pounds of pot and about $100,000 in cash was discovered in the basement of Special Moments Daycare, and police concluded that is what the three gunmen were after when they barged in during the Friday afternoon nap period.

One of the suspects was shot and wounded by officers responding to the 911 call. None of the dozen or so kids or any of the staff members was hurt.

The New York Times reported Sunday detectives had originally thought the robbery was connected to the center's pay day. Then one of the suspects allegedly told them they were after a bigger prize.

"It now appears the daycare center was a drug haven, or where drugs in significant quantities were kept, primarily marijuana," Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said Saturday. "It appears to be what the robbers were looking for."

The husband and wife who run the daycare center were arrested.
