State and federal police targeted the area after the recent arrest of Apaseo El Alto's top two police officials for alleged links to La Familia, a drug syndicate based in the neighboring state of Michoacan, Guanajuato Gov. Juan Manuel Oliva said Friday.

The state of Guanajuato is a corridor for drug traffickers and Central Americans trying to enter the United States illegally, the Chronicle reported. La Familia has been battling for control of the region with the Zetas, a trafficking gang based along the South Texas border, the Chronicle reported.
