Guilty plea from Detroit official Conyers

DETROIT, June 26 (UPI) -- Detroit City Council President Pro Tem Monica Conyers pleaded guilty to conspiring to commit bribery and faces a maximum sentence of five years in prison.

The Detroit Free Press said Conyers pleaded guilty to conspiracy charges Friday. "The defendant now stands convicted," U.S. District Judge Avern Cohn said following the council president's plea.

Conyers, wife of U.S. Rep. John Conyers, D-Mich., and was charged as part of the Synagro Technologies bribery probe, the Free Press reported.

FBI Special Agent in Charge Andy Arena hinted Friday other corruption cases are likely in a related investigation into possible City Hall corruption.

"This is not the beginning and it is certainly not the end, folks," Arena said.

WDIV-TV Detroit, said Conyers had been accused of accepting bribes from a Synagro Technologies official in 2007 as payment for her support of a city contract with the company. A sentencing date for Conyers has yet to be set.
