MIAMI, June 24 (UPI) -- The Mexican government canceled its Tropical Storm Andres warning for the southwestern coast early Wednesday as the system moved over the Pacific Ocean.
The U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami reported the storm's center was about 90 miles southwest of Cabo Corrientes and about 315 miles southeast of the southern tip of Baja California at 5 a.m. EDT.
Andres briefly attained hurricane status Tuesday afternoon, but its winds fell back to tropical storm strength, about 60 mph with higher gusts extending 70 miles outward from the center, the forecast said.
The storm was moving northwest nearly 9 mph and forecasters said a turn to the northwest was expected in the next 24 hours. That would mean Andres would at least brush the southern tip of the Baja Peninsula with wind, rain and high surf conditions by Friday, forecasters said.
