BOGOTA, June 24 (UPI) -- One-time Colombian presidential hopeful Ingrid Betancourt, who was held hostage by leftist rebels for six years, has filed for divorce.

Betancourt and her husband Juan Carlos Lecompte are ending their marriage after 12 years, El Tiempor reported Wednesday.

An attorney for Betancourt confirmed the divorce proceedings are under way and should be complete in six to eight months.

Fellow freed hostages suggested in a recently released book that Betancourt, who was held by Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia rebels for six years and freed in July 2008, was unfaithful to her husband while in captivity.
