Flash flood sweeps away boy, 2 men

ALBUQUERQUE, June 24 (UPI) -- A teenage boy and two New Mexico construction workers were swept away by a wall of water from a flooded creek in Albuquerque, firefighters said.

None of the victims were seriously injured but the 13-year-old was taken to University of New Mexico Hospital, the Albuquerque Journal reported Wednesday.

Firefighters Manuel Valenzuela and Julian Trujillo were out running errands when they spotted the boy in the creek near Eubank and Interstate 40, the newspaper said.

Valenzuela said he and Trujillo ran for about a mile trying to keep track of the teen until they got a piece of rope from some men they passed.

"We tied it off like we were trained to do," Trujillo said. "And we threw the rope to the victim so he could catch it."

Trujillo said he and Valenzuela were able to pull the boy to safety.

The two construction workers managed to pull themselves out of the water. They were working on the Interstate 40-San Mateo bridge when they were swept into the creek.
