Armed robberies plague Georgia Tech

ATLANTA, June 23 (UPI) -- Atlanta police said Tuesday they're investigating yet another armed robbery of a Georgia Tech student.

The latest robbery occurred overnight at an apartment complex just south of the campus. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported there have been 10 armed robberies, nine targeting students, since Feb. 7 in neighborhoods surrounding Georgia Tech. One student was shot and wounded.

None of the incidents occurred on campus, the newspaper said, which means they fall under the jurisdiction of the Atlanta Police Department.

The newspaper said in the latest robbery, an unnamed graduate student was walking home at the Centennial Place Apartments.

"The victim was ... was approached by a black male in his early 20s with dread locks, a white T-shirt, blue jeans and white shoes," Atlanta police spokesman Eric Schwartz told the newspaper. "The suspect had a gun and demanded the victim give him everything he had."

Police said a neighbor saw the robbery and screamed, scaring off the gunman, who managed only to take a pack of cigarettes.

Centennial Place, a large complex of apartments and town homes, stretches south to Centennial Olympic Park. Atlanta City Council President Lisa Borders owns a town home in complex, which was burglarized last month by intruders who kicked in a glass door while the mayoral candidate slept upstairs, the Journal-Constitution said.
