Woman killed by stampeding cattle

WARRINGTON, England, June 22 (UPI) -- A 49-year-old woman in Britain was trampled to death by a herd of cattle that reacted aggressively toward her two dogs, police say.

Police said the woman, whose identity was not released, had been walking her two dogs on the Pennine Way national trail in North Yorkshire when she came upon a herd of cows and calves, the Daily Mail reported Monday.

The cattle were likely spooked by the dogs and the Cheshire County resident, who was vacationing in the area, police said.

The woman's two dogs were found unhurt at the scene after her body was discovered Sunday, leading police to suspect she may have been trampled while trying to protect her pets.

National Farmers Union official Ken Buck told the Mail the cattle were likely acted instinctively to protect their calves from the dogs.

"It's best for the owner in this situation to just drop the leads and let the dogs go," he said in suggesting the best way to handle such a dangerous situation.
