CUMBERLAND, R.I., June 22 (UPI) -- Two Cranston, R.I., residents stole laptop and desktop computers from area schools and then sold them to school employees and others, police allege.
Police allege Kevin Legacy, 20, and his 52-year-old father, Robert, conducted a scheme in which Kevin stole 21 school district computers so his father, the district's director of information technology, could sell the goods to unsuspecting victims, The Providence (R.I.) Journal said Monday.
Among those individuals who purchased one of the allegedly stolen computers were a high school student, an elementary school principal and a school department financial manager.
Police said all of the stolen items have since been recovered as evidence.
The alleged computer theft scheme was uncovered after Mike Chandler, the computer network
manager for the school department, voiced concerns that prompted a police investigation.
The Journal said Robert Legacy is facing charges felony embezzlement, conspiracy and receiving stolen goods, while his son is facing larceny and conspiracy charges.
