Craigslist killer suspect pleads innocent

BOSTON, June 22 (UPI) -- Boston medical student Philip Markoff says he is not guilty of killing a masseuse he met on the Craigslist Web site.

Appearing Monday at an arraignment in Suffolk County, Mass., Superior Court, Markoff, in clear, confident voice, said "not guilty" when asked how he pled to first-degree murder and six other charges, The Boston Globe reported.

The newspaper said Markoff expressed no emotions during the court hearing as Assistant Suffolk District Attorney Edmond Zabin described what he called the "brutality in the deadly assault against" Julissa Brisman, 25, and the "brutal nature" of attacks on two other women Markoff allegedly met through want ad Web site Craiglistlist.

Zabin was allowed to continue with the colorful descriptions of the alleged crimes over the objections of defense attorney John Salsberg, who contended to Magistrate Gary Wilson that they would taint the potential jury pool, the Globe said.

A grand jury last week returned a seven-count indictment Markoff, 23, who was charged with first-degree murder, armed robbery, two counts of armed kidnapping, armed assault with intent to commit robbery and two counts of unlawful possession of a firearm, the newspaper reported.
