Medvedev: Russia prepared for nuclear cuts

AMSTERDAM, Netherlands, June 20 (UPI) -- Russian President Dmitry Medvedev says his country is fully prepared to whittle down its arsenal of nuclear weapons.

ITAR-TASS reported Saturday that Medvedev has confirmed Russia's willingness to follow Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty regulations by reducing its supply of nuclear weaponry.

After meeting with Dutch Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende, Medvedev said the number of Russian nuclear warheads should fall below levels detailed in the international agreement.

Medvedev is scheduled to meet with U.S. President Barack Obama in July to discuss the U.S-Russia agreement, but the Russian president did not offer additional specific details regarding his country's proposals for those talks.

"Without disclosing all the details, I'll give some aspects -- we advocate real and checked reduction and will insist on this," Medvedev said.
