KABUL, Afghanistan, June 20 (UPI) -- A soldier serving with the Welsh Guards in Afghanistan has become the 169th member of the British military to be killed there, officials said Saturday.
The Ministry of Defense said the soldier was on routine patrol Friday morning in Helmand Province when an improvised explosive device went off, the Daily Mail reported.
"Today is another sad day for Task Force Helmand as it is with deep regret that we report the death of another member of the services on duty in Afghanistan," said Lt. Col. Nick Richardson, commander of Task Force Helmand. "Our heartfelt thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends of the deceased and also to the soldiers of 1st Battalion Welsh Guards."
Officials said the soldier's family had been notified of his death.
