U.N., Formula 1 drivers gear up for food

LONDON, June 18 (UPI) -- Panasonic Toyota Racing Formula 1 drivers will team with the U.N. food agency at the British Grand Prix Sunday to raise awareness of hunger in schools.

Drivers Jarno Trulli and Timo Glock will drive cars sporting the World Food Program "Fill the Cup" campaign logo for the rest of the 2009 season, starting at the Silverstone racetrack Sunday, the United Nations said Thursday in a news release.

The "Fill the Cup" initiative raises money for the agency's school programs providing daily meals to more than 20 million children in elementary schools in 68 countries, the United Nations said.

"Formula 1 provides a unique opportunity for the fight against global hunger to gain traction," said Nancy Roman, the World Food Program's director of public policy, communications and private partnerships.

"This is a great opportunity to reach all motorsport fans, from the thousands who attend each Grand Prix to the many millions who watch the racing on TV," Trulli said. "It only costs 15 pence (24 cents) to give a hungry child a cup with porridge. We need as many people as possible to know they can contribute to find a solution to hunger."
