Man who threw baby from car may get death

TAMPA, Fla., June 18 (UPI) -- The state will seek the death penalty for a Tampa., Fla., man accused of tossing his ex-girlfriend's 3-month-old son from a moving car, authorities said.

Authorities say Richard McTear, 21, attacked Jasmine Bedwell, 17, and her son, Emanuel Wesley Murray, May 5. They say McTear drove off with the baby in a car, then threw him out a window onto Interstate 275.

The child was not his son.

McTear has pleaded not guilty to first degree murder.

A woman who described herself as McTear's new girlfriend and fiancee bowed her head and cried Wednesday after a prosecutor announced the state's intentions, the St. Petersburg Times said.

"I know he didn't do it," Ida Williams, 40, said afterward.

McTear had been accused by other women of stalking, dragging and beating them unconscious, breaking into homes and threatening to kill a child, the newspaper said.
