Man tied to grisly killing freed by court

COLUMBUS, Ohio, June 18 (UPI) -- A 48-year-old man tied to the grisly killing of an Ohio teenage couple in 1982 was freed from jail for lack of evidence, his attorney says.

Defense attorney K. Robert Toy said Kenneth Linscott was freed from jail after pleading guilty to misdemeanor abuse of a corpse in relation to the killings of Todd Schultz, 19, and his fiancee, Annette Cooper, 18, The Columbus (Ohio) Dispatch said Thursday.

Linscott's plea resulted in a six-month jail sentence, but he was freed with time served because he had been imprisoned since Sept. 1.

"It was a plea of convenience," Toy said of Wednesday's plea from Linscott. "Kenny had nothing to do with this case -- in any fashion."

Toy said prosecutors in the case had primarily focused on an initial claim that Linscott was involved with the murders from Chester McKnight, the man convicted of killing the teens.

"They relied too much on McKnight's statements," Toy said regarding the convicted sex offender, who later cleared Linscott in the killings. "They didn't have any evidence."

The Dispatch said prosecutors accused Linscott of carving up and disposing of Cooper's and Schultz's bodies after they were killed by McKnight.
