Grandmother stops traffic to rescue tot

ORLANDO, Fla., June 18 (UPI) -- A grandmother who spotted a 2-year-old boy in a busy Florida intersection bolted from her car, stopped traffic and picked up the child, authorities said.

Gina Melder recalled seeing the child Wednesday night at Route 520 and Courtney Parkway on Merritt Island.

"I put my car into park and jumped out and grabbed him and put him in my back seat," Melder told WFTV, Orlando.

"I didn't think. I just grabbed him. I didn't care what cars were around."

Melder called 911 from a drugstore.

The boy, who suffered minor injuries, was not in a car seat and had fallen out of the backseat of his mother's car, the station reported. The mother, Laway Mehari, drove more than a mile before realizing he wasn't there, then called 911, WFTV said.

Mehari was arrested and charged with child neglect, the station said. The boy went home with his father.

An infant who was also in Mehari's car was in a car seat, authorities said.
