OTTAWA, June 17 (UPI) -- Private talks in Ottawa were under way Wednesday between the prime minister and opposition leader in a bid to stave off a summer election, sources said.
Stephen Harper hosted Liberal leader Michael Ignatieff after two hour-long meetings Tuesday, sources told the Globe and Mail.
Last week, Harper gave his progress report on how his minority Conservative government was handling the recession, and Parliament is scheduled to vote on it Friday.
Both the socialist New Democratic Party and separatist Bloc Quebecois have said they will vote against accepting it, but without Liberal support, can't bring down the government and force an election.
Among Ignatieff's demands is that the Conservatives make eligibility periods for Employment Insurance benefits uniform across the country, detail accounting of how the recessionary deficit will be paid down and say where the economic stimulus spending is going, the Canwest News Service said.
The Globe said despite the leaders' apparent diplomacy, the House of Commons was raucous Tuesday with attacks on the Conservatives.
