British adulterer freed from Dubai jail

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates, June 17 (UPI) -- A British woman has been released from a Dubai jail after serving six weeks of a two-month jail sentence for adultery, sources say.

Sally Antia, 44, has flown to Australia with her husband, Vincent, who turned her in to United Arab Emirates authorities for having an alleged affair with a British man, Mark Hawkins, 43, in a violation of Dubai's Shariah-based legal codes, unnamed sources told Wednesday's Times of London.

"Although she is British and could have flown to the U.K., she decided to fly to Brisbane instead. She and Vincent were booked on the same plane," the source said.

The newspaper said the incident began when Vincent Antia, 48, reported his wife's alleged affair to the Dubai police, who arrested her and Hawkins as they were leaving a hotel after reportedly spending six days together. Vincent Antia said he didn't want to press charges, but the case proceeded without his cooperation.

Sally Antia told the newspaper last month her imprisonment was like being in a labor camp, saying, "The food, when you get it, has maggots in it. The lights are on all day and night. I am frightened and I feel totally abandoned."
