TOKYO, June 15 (UPI) -- Japanese Prime Minister Taro Aso's Liberal Democratic Party-led coalition saw its public support take another plunge in a survey released Monday.
In a telephone survey done for Kyodo News, Aso's public support fell to 17.5 percent in June, down 8.7 percentage points from last month.
The government in recent months has been plagued by cabinet resignations, the recession and pressure from the main opposition Democratic Party of Japan, which already controls the upper house, to call general elections to the lower house of parliament which must be held before the fall.
In the telephone survey taken during the weekend, 38.5 percent of the respondents expressed support for the main opposition DPJ, compared with 19.8 percent for Aso's LDP, Kyodo reported, adding it was the lowest number for the ruling party on Kyodo polls.
When asked which party they would vote for in the next election, 47.8 percent supported the DPJ and 18.7 percent the LDP.
The disapproval rating for Aso's Cabinet rose to 70.6 percent, up 10.4 points from May.
