McConnell: GOP opposes healthcare plan

WASHINGTON, June 14 (UPI) -- Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell said Sunday President Barack Obama's plan for government-backed health insurance for the public is opposed by his caucus.

In an appearance on CBS's "Face the Nation" program, the Kentucky Republican said the plan is a "non-starter" for most Republican senators. He said Obama's plan would hurt private insurers even though people would be able to have private insurance.

"We can make incredible improvements in American healthcare, but I don't think having more government -- in effect putting Washington between you and your doctor -- is the way to go," he said.

McConnell said already lawmakers are grappling with how to pay for government-run healthcare programs.

"Let me tell you what I would do if I were in charge," he said. "I would equalize the tax treatment between companies and individuals," meaning he would give individuals paying for their healthcare a tax deduction.
