SAN DIEGO, June 12 (UPI) -- A Mexican national was in custody Friday after he was arrested allegedly hauling more than a ton of marijuana through the rural San Diego County mountains.

The unidentified 48-year-old driver was behind the wheel of a semi-truck that was stopped at a Border Patrol checkpoint in Pine Valley on Thursday.

Agents say they found about 2,400 pounds of pot mixed in with a cargo of wood chips.

The San Diego Union-Tribune said the marijuana, which had an estimated value of about $1.5 million, was turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration.
