WASHINGTON, June 11 (UPI) -- U.S. Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, clipped a female pedestrian with his car at a Washington crosswalk, a source who witnessed the alleged incident says.
The unidentified source alleged Hatch did indeed strike the unidentified woman with his Cadillac during a thunderstorm Tuesday evening, an allegation the Republican senator has denied, The Washington Post reported Wednesday.
"He hit her but she is OK," the source alleged.
Hatch admitted he was involved in a near-accident Tuesday night on Capital Hill, but insisted the pedestrian was able to move out of the way of his vehicle.
"I was mortified," Hatch told the Post in a telephone interview. "I didn't see her at all."
The 75-year-old politician said he immediately stopped to check on the pedestrian Tuesday and to apologize for the incident.
"I said, 'I didn't see you. I'm so sorry,'" Hatch said. "She seemed OK. I felt really badly about it."
The Post said while Hatch insists he contacted police regarding the near-accident, a Capitol Police spokeswoman maintains there is no record of an incident report .
