Box of bones found in Utah likely human

SPRINGVILLE, Utah, June 10 (UPI) -- Police in Springville, Utah, say bones found inside a box by a railroad worker appear to be human remains.

The Salt Lake Tribune said while a medical examiner will officially determine if the bones discovered Tuesday are indeed human, Springville Police Lt. Dave Caron said initial signs pointed to such a conclusion.

"It certainly appears to be a human skull," Caron said.

The unidentified railroad worker found the box underneath sagebrush while working on a construction project, Caron said.

Caron told the Tribune details regarding the discovery were sparse and authorities have yet to determine the origin of the remains.

"We don't have any idea if they are new or if they are from a Native American burial site that was illegally raided. We don't know if it was a modern-day death," he said.
