WICHITA, Kan., June 9 (UPI) -- The family of Dr. George R. Tiller announced Tuesday that his abortion clinic in Wichita, Kansas, has closed down for good.

The clinic, Women's Health Care Services Inc., was one of the few in the United States that performed late-term abortions, making Tiller, 67, who was shot dead May 31, a lightning rod for the anti-abortion movement. The Tiller family released a statement through lawyers, The Washington Post reported.

"Notice is being given today to all concerned that the Tiller family is ceasing operation of the clinic and any involvement by family members in any other similar clinic," the statement said. "We are proud of the service and courage shown by our husband and father and know that women's health care needs have been met because of his dedication and service. That is a legacy that will never die. The family will honor Dr. Tiller's memory through private charitable activities."

Scott Roeder, who allegedly shot Tiller at a Lutheran church where the doctor was ushering at a Sunday service, told CNN the clinic closing is "a victory for the unborn."

Roeder, interviewed in the Sedgwick County Jail, also said news reports he is a diagnosed schizophrenic are untrue.
