SOUTHLAKE, Texas, June 9 (UPI) -- Former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, who told prosecutors he was nearly broke, has moved into a rented $1 million mansion in Southlake, Texas, neighbors say.
Lawyers for Kilpatrick, who resigned as Detroit's mayor last year after his conviction on political corruption charges, had told prosecutors he had only $6 per month left after expenses. But residents in the wealthy Dallas suburb told Tuesday's Detroit News that Kilpatrick has moved into five-bedroom, 5,886-square-foot custom-built home.
"I waved to him, and he waved back," Stuart Wood, the president of the neighborhood association who lives across the street, told the newspaper. "If you want to escape the limelight and move into a private community with ducks and geese and wildlife, this is the place."
Kilpatrick is liable for $1 million in restitution as part of his plea agreement to escape a longer prison sentence. Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy said last week Kilpatrick hasn't fully disclosed all his assets while claiming poverty and has been tardy on restitution payments, the News said.
She has reportedly demanded answers from parole officers as to why Kilpatrick hasn't been charged with probation violations.
