BOSTON, June 9 (UPI) -- Former Massachusetts House speaker Salvatore DiMasi has pleaded not guilty to federal corruption charges, officials say.
Appearing at a U.S. District Court arraignment in Boston Monday, DiMasi, once considered the state's most powerful politician, said "not guilty" in a firm voice when asked how he pleaded, The Boston Globe reported.
DiMasi has been charged with pocketing $57,000 from a Burlington, Mass., software firm in exchange for helping the company gain lucrative state contracts. His arraignment came almost exactly four years after his predecessor, Thomas Finneran, also pleaded not guilty during a federal court arraignment, the newspaper said. Finneran eventually pleaded guilty to charges of lying about his role in a legislative redistricting scheme.
DiMasi and three colleagues, who also were arraigned Monday and entered similar innocent pleas, face up to 20 years for each of seven counts of mail and wire fraud, as well as up to five years each on conspiracy counts, the Globe reported.
